HMI replacement buying guide
How to buy a used HMI panel
Start an HMI replacement enquiry with the complete operator-panel model and the controller it connects to. Screen size helps narrow the search, while the communication protocol, supply, input method and machine application determine the requirements for the replacement.
Use the checks below when sourcing a used touchscreen, keypad terminal or related accessory. They help you compare an offer and explain what must be confirmed before ordering, including cases where the original display no longer works.
Read the full label and identify what you need
Record the manufacturer and complete catalog number from the rear label, including every suffix. Add the hardware series and firmware or system version when available. If a label is damaged, provide the readable characters and a photo; leave missing characters open for review.
State whether you need a complete operator terminal, a display component, a communication module, a cable or a mounting accessory. A photo showing a populated assembly does not define the contents of the offer. List connectors, mounting clips, memory media and other items required with the replacement.
For example, 2711-NC2 is a remote keyswitch and RS-232 port assembly with a 3 m cable for specified legacy PanelView terminals. Confirm its keys, cap, gasket and compatible terminal model when ordering the assembly.
Match the controller network and power supply
Include the PLC or controller model and the communication protocol used by the machine. Compare the terminal's exact network variant and available ports. Connector shape alone does not establish Ethernet, serial or fieldbus compatibility.
| Exact model | Communication | Operator input | Supply variant |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2711-K10C1 | Remote I/O | Keypad | AC |
| 2711-K10C8 | DH+ | Keypad | AC |
| 2711-K10C15 | ControlNet | Keypad | AC |
| 2711-K10C16 | RS-232 (DF1) | Keypad | AC |
| 2711-T10C10L1 | DeviceNet | Touchscreen | DC, L1 suffix |
The listed AC models use 85–264 V AC at 47–63 Hz. The listed L1 model uses 18–32 V DC, with 24 V DC nominal supply. These are model specifications; check the offered label before selection. Rockwell Automation technical data, pages 7 and 12.
Also confirm the intended use of each port. On the documented PanelView Standard DH-485 variants, application transfer uses the communication path; a separate printer port is not a general replacement for that connection. Include the existing cables and any interface converter in the review.
Compare the display, input method and panel cutout
Check the display resolution and active area along with the physical screen size. Preserve whether the application uses touch, function keys or a combined interface. Compare the overall housing, mounting depth and connector clearance with the available space.
Measure the existing panel opening separately from the terminal's overall dimensions. Include mounting clips or studs and the condition of the gasket. Where an adapter is needed, confirm both the old terminal and proposed replacement against the adapter drawing.
The 2711-NR5K kit adapts an existing PanelView 1200/1200e/1400e keypad cutout for specified replacement keypad terminals. Its role is mechanical; software and network requirements still need to be checked. Manufacturer adapter instructions.
PanelView Plus 6 vs Plus 7: compare exact configurations
The four models below have 10.4-inch touch displays. Their power supplies, panel openings and communication arrangements differ. Start with the complete installed model and assess the proposed replacement against the machine application.
| Exact model | Platform | Communication | Input supply | Cutout, H × W |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2711P-T10C4D7 | Legacy Plus CE | Ethernet and RS-232 | 18–32 V DC | 224 × 305 mm |
| 2711P-T10C4A8 | Plus 6 | Ethernet and RS-232 | 100–240 V AC, 50–60 Hz | 224 × 305 mm |
| 2711P-T10C21D8S | Plus 7 Standard | One Ethernet port | 18–30 V DC | 224 × 269 mm |
| 2711P-T10C22D9P | Plus 7 Performance | Two Ethernet ports; DLR, linear or star | 18–30 V DC | 224 × 269 mm |
Manufacturer references: legacy Plus/CE manual, pages 16–21 and 34, Plus 6 data, pages 5–6, Plus 7 Standard data, page 5 and Plus 7 Performance data, page 6.
These dimensions describe the listed touch models. The two Plus 7 examples share an opening, while their network and software requirements still need review. Confirm the project conversion, controller drivers, hardware series, firmware, available depth and connector clearance before agreeing a substitute.
Prepare the application backup and transfer requirements
Identify the programming software, version and available application backup. Record the controller driver, addresses, network settings and any machine-specific requirements. A hardware offer does not establish that your machine application or a software licence is included.
PanelView Standard uses PanelBuilder32. Confirm the exact terminal type selected in the project and the required upload/download connection. If the old panel has failed, state whether a usable backup exists and what can still be accessed; application recovery must be assessed separately from hardware sourcing.
Check the hardware series and storage format
For 2711P-T10C22D9P, Series A lists 512 MB RAM and Windows CE 6.0; Series B lists 4 GB RAM and Windows 10 IoT Core. Confirm the offered series and firmware before assessing the project and transfer method. Legacy Plus/CE uses CompactFlash, while the reviewed Plus 6 and Plus 7 models use SD storage; match the backup media and procedure to the exact platform.
When considering another model or generation, ask for the proposed application, communication and mounting changes to be identified before ordering. Keep any required conversion or commissioning work explicit in the enquiry.
For Siemens, identify the exact Basic, Comfort, Unified or SMART generation before reviewing the project. KTP400 Basic 6AV2123-2DB03-0AX0 specifies WinCC Basic V13 or later; MTP1200 Unified Basic 6AV2123-3MB32-0AW0 specifies WinCC Unified Basic V18 Update 3 or later. These exact-article requirements are documented on the linked model pages. Include the source project and installed software version when requesting a replacement.
For a panel PC, also record the processor, installed memory, storage, operating system and recoverable application. A thin client needs its host connection reviewed, while an industrial flat panel needs the separate computer, video and touch connections identified.
Review actual photos and test evidence
Use our condition definitions to state acceptable condition. Ask for available photos of the offered front panel, powered display, rear label, connectors and mounting parts. Reference photos help identify a product; actual-unit photos show the offered condition and contents.
- Display: ask about visible damage, backlight, image stability and the screen areas shown in the available evidence.
- Operator input: confirm whether touch response across the panel or the required keypad/function keys were checked.
- Communication: ask which port and protocol were tested, with what equipment, and whether application transfer or controller communication was demonstrated.
- Completeness: confirm terminal blocks, caps, clips, keys, gaskets and accessories against the specific offer.
A powered screen is one check; it does not establish every touch point, key or communication function. Specify the evidence you need and confirm the available test scope for the offered unit.
Send an exact-model replacement enquiry
Send the full model, quantity, destination and required date. Add acceptable condition, hardware/firmware requirements, controller and network, application-backup status, mounting constraints, accessories and requested tests. Explain which requirements remain unknown.
Review the written quote for the actual model and version, condition, included items, available evidence, price and dispatch timing. Our existing shipping and payment information, warranty / DOA terms and returns policy explain the purchasing process.
